How fast is a GP3 car?

05.05.2013

Forget what you used to think about GP3. New car will transform the category thoroughly.

Coming from World Series by Renault to GP3 Series may seem as a step back and a year ago it would be. But new GP3 car for 2013-2016 changes what people were used to think about GP3. And of course GP3 races are held during F1 weekends so young hopefuls have always the chance to show themselves to the big guns of motor racing  world.

New GP3 chassis is called GP3/13 and built again by Dallara but it can be considered as a relatively minor change. While the old car used in 2010-2012 was quite close to F3 and 2-litre Formula Renault performance-wise, the new one has made a huge step up. Two-litre turbocharged engine was replaced with 3.4-litre V6 and maximum power was increased from 280 to 400 HP. GP3/13 achieves 100 kph in three seconds and can clock up to 285 kph. Laptimes achieved during the winter tests were five-six seconds better than with the old car. In this sense GP3 is now not far from much more powerful Formula Renault 3.5 cars (see table). That said, GP3/13 stands very much in the beginning of its development cycle and conditions during the tests were anything but ideal, so much better laptimes can be expected during the competitive season.
