Weekend to forget

Kevin hit all kinds of troubles at Spa WSR event and scored no points

Kevin at very wet Spa

Third weekend of this year’s World Series by Renault took teams and drivers to Spa-Franchorchamps in Belgium. The majestic track in Ardennes was not kind to Kevin. Almost everything went wrong and Kevin couldn’t add a single point to his account.

Weekend started very well. Kevin was 6th and 5th in free practice sessions on Friday and gap to the fastest was as minuscule as 0.063 seconds.

It was Saturday morning when things started to turn pear-shaped during the qualification. First fast lap was spoiled when yellow flags were put out in the last corner. Second attempt to post a fast qualifier was ruined by red flag. And when Kevin tried to go out for third time the gear selection did not work.

This meant start form the 24th position but when it seemed things couldn’t be worse they still did: clutch failure and DNS.

Sunday was classic Spa – rain and wet track. Track conditions changed all the time during qualifying and Kevin was even on top of the leaderboard for a while. But then team decided to save some fresh tires for the race and Kevin was unable to better his time when track conditions improved towards the end of the session. 15th time was converted to 13th on the grid when several drivers were penalized different infringements.

Start was taken behind the safety car as the visibility was extremely bad. In fact it was so bad that overtaking became virtually impossible due to the water spray. Many drivers made their compulsory tire-change during the early laps of pit-stop window but team choose to keep Kevin out. It could have brought some dividends but the strategy flew out of the window when first safety car was deployed and then the race was red-flagged. Kevin had climbed to fourth by then but had to pit after the restart and plummeted to 13th in the classification.

Kevin: „Everything looked very promising after the free practice, I could have went for a win. Leaders were just hundredths away and my team-mate behind me. Then on Saturday first the gearbox refused to change the gears and then the clutch expired on the grid. On Sunday we had a rain. Normally there are great speed differences on the wet track and you can overtake slower cars but this time the visibility was so bad everybody run in procession. You simply couldn’t see anything in the spray, and I mean anything. Even the red light on the back of the car in front of you car was hidden in the spray. Pit-stop was left very late and then everybody caught me when SC went out. All in all – bad weekend, no points.“

WSR now takes a four-week break. Next two rounds will take place at Nürburgring on June 30 and July 1.
